2008 Team Award Winners
Sean Scott - Most Valuable Player
Sean didn't lead the team in any one category, but he was up there in them all. Sean was asked to play some outfield and played flawlessly. Sean's .333 batting average and 1.97 ERA on the mound along with his play in the outfield and third base...won him this award.
For the first time in Oaks history, there were two winners of the Tony Mak Award.
Greg Matson - Tony Mak Award
Tyler Finley - Tony Mak Award
This award is given annually to the player who would have made legendary coach, Tony Makjavich the most proud. This award goes to the player who demonstrates leadership, hustle, and determination.
There is something missing from the description of the Tony Mak Award above...heart. Greg Matson showed as much heart as any player I have ever coached. Greg damaged his throwing elbow during the season. It was bad enough that it required Tommy John surgery. Greg's doctor recommended he have surgery right away, but he put it off until after the season and continued to swing the bat, hitting .377 on the year. Sacrificing your body for the team will certainly win you awards!
Tyler Finley wins this award for an entirely different reason. Tyler is a catcher. Catchers need to be tough at this level. Tyler is tough and plays the game with a very high level of determination. Remember, hustle and determination make up a large part of this award. Tyler demonstrated both of these qualities on a consistent basis throughout the season. One was never sure if the backstop was going to actually STOP Tyler hustling after a foul ball!
